He worked to get more and better recreational facilities established in the classroom and on the athletic field, graduating from high school with honors in 1966. By 1857, the year he published his book Villas and Cottages, Vaux had moved north from Louisiana, and both worked at the invitation of Andrew Jackson Downing, the reform-minded writer on houses and gardens.
